Contents page LIIAR analysis

Language  By using dramatic phrases like ‘Famous last words’ it draws the audience in and makes interested due to morbid curiosity. The majority of the titles used in the features are just the bands names which makes it obvious which bands are featured and this appeals to fans who prefer particular types of bands so they will know where to go straight away.
Ideology – The magazine uses album reviews to challenge the audiences views as it shows reviews from other people which the audience may or may not agree with. So the reviews are featured in their own section of the magazine. The recent news is shown quite near the front of the magazine which shows the importance of having the most up to date information available and how much the magazine values telling it to the reader.
Institution – The contents page also has a section which has a comment from the editor to the audience which will briefly summarize up parts of the magazine to interest the reader more and have any other personal messages, this makes the magazine more personnel to the reader as its informal and also succeeds in advertising select parts of the magazine as well.
Audience – The target audience of these magazine is aimed at teenagers and young adults. So by featuring teenagers in the article images it makes the audience relate to the magazine more.
Representations – The contents page follows the colour scheme of yellow and black. The black fits in with the alternative style whilst the yellows has connotes caution and danger so it makes it more noticeable against the black on the page. The use of font used for titles like the ‘Kerrang!’ and ‘This week’ used a rough and messy font which represents the rock music industry with the idea that its ‘rough around the edges’ and is often connected with rebellious behaviour.
Language Kerrang! Continues to use terms that are commonly used by the select target audience of a younger generation like ‘swag’ and also uses ‘armful’ in advertising the competition which makes the prize appear to be much larger then actually is which makes it more appealing towards the readers. ‘Gerard Ways got a rodent problem, while Gallows are battling chickens. Wait whaaaaaaaaat?’ is one of the lines used to explain on of the articles in the contents, the phrase is appealing to the audience due to its comical nature and the fact it doesn't actually explain anything so the reader wants to know more.
Institution The contents features a section which has a comment from the editor, this makes the magazine more personnel to the reader as its informal and also succeeds in advertising select parts of the magazine as well.
Ideology The order of the articles shown in the contents page shows a level of importance with how its ordered. For example the recent new is near the front as it’s something deemed important whilst live reviews and features follow afterwards which has been specifically chosen to be further back in the magazine due to reader values of importance.
Audience – The contents page also is targeted for young adults and teenagers due to the fact it’s quite colourful and features some images but not enough for it to be deemed childish. It’s still also able to feature important news and stories that are current at the time.
Representation – The colour theme of the magazine continues from the front cover with the use of red and yellow due to its eye catching nature. But the contents also utilizes the change of font in certain areas. The wind Text is in a completely different font from the rest of the page which makes it more noticeable. Not only does the font change but the colour of the font changes with it using the title ‘IRON MAIDEN’ which is in red letters on a yellow background making it the most noticeable part of the title as it isolates it from the rest of the sentence making it instantly more eye catching.

Language Using article titles like 'This weeks's best gigs'appeals to the audience as it makes them want to know what the institution  has deemed the best.
IdeologyThe magazine shows that it values telling the latest news to its readers by placing it at the top of the features list. The features list also shows what the institution thinks it most important to the reader by showing what would be deemed to be more interesting to an audience who would buy a music magazine. As it doesn't have all the features in the same layout as some are featured listed underneath which don't fit into a category .
Institution – NME is published by IPC Media, the UK’s leading publisher of consumer magazines. Over 26 million adults read an IPC Media magazine and over 350 million copies are sold each year.
AudienceThis magazine will be targeted at older teenagers and adults, this is shown by the comparison of for example 'Kerrang!' which features brighter colours to grab more attention of the reader. Whilst this NME contents page is mostly white and looks more mature and organised.
Representations The red on the page represents the passion towards music to the reader which follows along with the theme of a music magazine.Whilst the black and white gives it a more professional and organised look like a news paper which makes it more appealing to adults. The main image on the page is two separate images cropped and combined to make it appear as it they've shortened the distance between the artists on stage by doing this is makes the page appear busier. The font that is made to stand out the most is the use of yellow font which contrasts against the red and black.

Contents page comparisons

The two ‘Kerrang!’ contents pages both follow the continuous yellow and black colour scheme used for the magazine (even if the one which has iron maiden on it features more yellow then the other) whilst the NME follows a red and white colour scheme which could connote passion for music and the yellow on the other two could represent caution signs which fits in with the general stereotypical view of rock music being aggressive or even dangerous. All three of the pages feature large block fonts as it makes it easier for the audience to read then for example if all the fonts were in script handwriting fonts. All three also have images of pages or images taken from further on in the magazine to appeal to the audience as they can see what appeals to them and what they want to read. Another similarity is that all the contents have sections in which the pages on the features list are organised into.
